Ask HN: Looking for career direction for generalist SWE

4 points by jimbohn 15 hours ago

I'm a generalist SWE with some years of experience, mostly high-level languages, k8s, AWS, docker, etc. Knowledge of machine learning with some published papers.

I feel like the writing is on the wall for being a generalist that operates at a high level due to LLMs, and I want to pivot towards a niche that has better long term prospects.

My gut feeling tells me that rust or CUDA could become interesting long term, but I'm wondering what the HN crowd has to say, especially when it comes to niches like distributed systems, databases, etc.

My dream job would be to work on something low level where performance matters, essentially a very technical profile, e.g. something like AWS S3 would be super fun.
