As a hacker gardener it's incredibly hard to find information on root structures. The information doesn't really exist. There are cool physical cutouts and stuff to get you started past the school yard clichés but it's still complex [1]
Their picture of a 'tree' is obviously a seedling, I don't see seedlings having 'earthquake' issues. The root structure shown is definitely not representative of a tree which might be resistant to earthquakes... I guess.
Contrary to school pictures tree roots are wide and shallow.
